June Mom of the Month: Johanna Hazebroek

From Instructor Ashley Youngblood: Jo has been a part of our Village since she was 8 months pregnant! This month is her 1 year anniversary with Stroller Strides. She always comes to class with a smile and is supportive and welcoming to all of the mamas in the group. She will be missed as she and her family are all packed up and making their way back to Australia! Let's hear more about Jo!

1. Who are the members of your family?

Myself, my husband Doug, and our son Mitchell, who is nearly 11 months.

2. What is or was your career?

I'm about to go back to work, starting at the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in a policy role. The three years before I had Mitchell I was completing my law degree, and before that I worked in government and at universities in Australia.

3. How long have you been a member of Stroller Strides of Savannah and what has it done for you?

I joined in June 2016, so just on 12 months! I joined as soon as I moved to Savannah at 8 months pregnant - it was so great to keep active safely at that late stage of my pregnancy. I think it made it easier to get back into shape after my son was born. With Stroller Strides I ran my first 5km when Mitchell was five weeks old - after I was cleared by my doctor of course!

Stroller Strides has not only been a fantastic way to keep my fitness up while getting the hang of this new mom thing, it has been the friendliest, most welcoming and encouraging bunch of women I've ever had the pleasure of meeting! All the moms are so supportive and non-judgmental; it's an incredible community to be part of!

4. What is something that has surprised you about motherhood?

I know it's a cliche, but how little sleep I am capable of functioning on!

5. Favorite website(s)?

I probably spend the most time on Facebook and Instagram! But I try to read news sites too, so I know what's going on in the world. In the months before and after having Mitchell I also spent a lot of time on What To Expect!

6. List three current obsessions.

Key Lime Pie (I had never had it before coming to Georgia and I LOVE it!), figuring out what Mitchell will actually eat now he is transitioning off purées 🙄, and planning our last vacation before I go back to work!

7. What is your child's/children's favorite thing about you or favorite thing that you do?

Tickles! He loves them ❤️

8. Any tips for other moms out there?

Ask for help! From your partner, family, friends, or a professional. There's no reason to be shy in seeking out advice, or in saying that you need a hand caring for your little love. More people than you expect will be willing to pitch in - it takes a village, after all.
